What is the Housing Committee?

Access to safe, affordable housing is a fundamental human right and a cornerstone of equity and opportunity.

The NAACP Vancouver Branch Housing Committee is dedicated to addressing the systemic barriers that prevent Black families and other marginalized communities from securing fair and adequate housing. Through education, advocacy, and collaboration, the committee works to promote policies and practices that ensure everyone in Clark County can live with dignity and stability.

The Housing Committee monitors local housing conditions, advocates for equitable policies at the city, county, and state levels, and partners with organizations to combat housing discrimination. This includes addressing challenges such as the lack of affordable housing, inequitable distribution of rental assistance programs, and rising rates of homelessness among economically disadvantaged populations. The committee also works to ensure that federal programs—like Section 8 housing assistance—are distributed fairly and without discrimination based on race, income, gender, family size, or housing subsidies.

Recognizing that discriminatory housing practices persist in both subtle and overt ways, the committee takes an active role in community engagement and education. By increasing public awareness of fair housing rights, supporting victims of housing discrimination, and advocating for increased funding for affordable housing programs, the committee aims to dismantle the structures that perpetuate housing inequity.

Through this ongoing work, the NAACP Vancouver Housing Committee reaffirms its commitment to equal opportunity and fair access to housing for all. Together, we can build a community where every family has a safe place to call home—and where housing justice is not just an aspiration, but a lived reality.
